истКомпания, основанная в апреле 1854 сторонниками вступления Канзаса [ Kansas] в состав США в качестве "свободного штата" [ free state]. В ее планы входила пропаганда переселения в Канзас из штатов Севера [ North], помощь переселенцам в оплате переезда, инвестиции в экономику Канзаса. Компания помогла переехать примерно 2 тыс. человек, которые основали несколько поселений, в дальнейшем ставших крупными городами штата. Когда в Канзасе начались вооруженные конфликты между противниками и сторонниками рабства, компания оказывала военную помощь первым. Сторонники рабства в федеральных органах власти обвиняли руководство компании в развязывании гражданской войны в Канзасе. истОбщественное движение за заселение Территории Канзас [ Kansas] и превращение ее в свободный штат [ free state], начатое в 1854 Илайей Тейером [Thayer, Eli] (1819-1899) и широко поддержанное политиками и бизнесменами на Востоке [ East]. Переселенцы переезжали за свой счет, а фирмы, участвовавшие в Движении, помогали им в обустройстве, строительстве общественных зданий в новых поселениях и др. вопросах. Городок на востоке штата Канзас, в 75 км к юго-западу от г. Канзас-Сити [ Kansas City]. 4,6 тыс. жителей (2000). Железнодорожный узел (зерновые, фрукты). Основан Новоанглийской компанией помощи переселенцам [ New England Emigrant Aid Company] в 1855. Стал известен в период борьбы за Канзас [ Bleeding Kansas] как место, где находился штаб Дж. Брауна [ Brown, John]. 30 августа 1856 был атакован отрядом из 250 миссурийцев-сторонников рабства. Поселок оборонял отряд из 40 человек. После отхода сторонников Брауна поселок был практически уничтожен. Стороны понесли небольшие потери, но это событие вошло в историю как битва за Осаватоми [Battle of Osawatomie]. Сохранилась бревенчатая хижина [ log cabin; John Brown Memorial Park], служившая штабом Брауна. Рядом с ней установлен памятник. Поселок также был одной из "станций" т.н. "Подземной железной дороги" [ Underground Railroad].
